How many times have you had a boss, co-worker, parent or spouse tell you to “be reasonable?” With a roll of your eyes you may say, “More times than I can remember.”
Well, for the record, I am sick and tired of reasonableness in general and, specifically, in reasonable people. Reasonable people can think of dozens of reasons why something can’t be done, shouldn’t be done, or has been done before and didn’t work and therefore should not be attempted again!
Being unreasonable all the time probably wouldn’t be smart. But if you are never unreasonable, then you probably aren’t walking and leading by faith in the God of the impossible!
He is not only the God of the impossible, but also of the improbable, unusual, unlikely, unthinkable, unimaginable. According to Esther 9:1, he is the God of the “Opposite.” Just when you think things are going to go one way, in his sovereign grace he turns it in the opposite direction.
According to Ephesians 3:20 he is the God who does exceeding, abundantly above all we are asking, dreaming and praying about. God loves to exceed our small thinking with his marvelous grace. Sometimes our imaginations get paralyzed and we are unable to see beyond the difficulty of our current situation and believe God for the impossible; it’s so hard, such a stretch for us to be unreasonable to the glory of God.
Go ahead and be unreasonable for a change. Step out of your comfort zone. Step up to something new and different. You might actually like it and see some wonderful things begin to happen.
On my trip to India a few years ago, I saw this on the wall of Dr. Ajai Lall, founder and director of the Central India Christian Mission.
I was motivated and inspired then, and am now, and wanted to share this with you.
ANYWAY
People are unreasonable, illogical and self-centered…love them anyway
If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives…do good anyway
If you are successful you win false friends and true enemies…succeed anyway
The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow…do good anyway
Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable…be honest and frank anyway
People favor underdogs but follow only top dogs…fight for some underdogs anyway
What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight…build anyway
People really need help but may attack you if you help them…help people anyway
Give the world the best you have and you’ll get kicked in the teeth…give the world the best anyway.
Yes! Be unreasonable. Do the unpopular, the seemingly crazy, the humanly impossible to the glory of God!
The great discoveries and achievements in the world, for God’s glory, have been attempted and accomplished by people who were unreasonable.
- Unreasonable in their prayers
- Unreasonable in their expectations
- Unreasonable in their belief that they could overcome difficult obstacles
Abraham, Noah, Esther and Moses are a few that come quickly to mind. Some of the things they did were not only unreasonable but what they attempted looked downright ridiculous from a human point of view.
Some of history’s most anointed spiritual leaders did unreasonable things that others told them would never work.
So I challenge you today to be unreasonable to the glory of God. Do I hear an “Amen” out there?
