On September 9th, I read John chapter 3 in the New Living Translation (NLT). I focused on verses 29 and 30:
“The bride will go where the bridegroom is. A bridegroom’s friend rejoices with him. I am the bridegroom’s friend and I am filled with joy at his success. He must become greater and greater, and I must become less and less.”
Here is what I wrote in my journal:
Jesus, I see two applicable truths here:
1. Being filled with joy over other people’s success
2. Allowing you to become more and more and me to become less and less
The first deals with true humility, with no tinge of envy, which is often the result of a runaway ego and comparing with others…whatever form that comparison takes.
The second has to do with making sure that what fruit is born in my life points back to you–not to me. It is ultimately about you. I am ultimately about you. Ministry is ultimately about you–not me!
Please, Lord, in my life and in your ministry through me, no pride, no envy.
“Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your name give glory, for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness.” Psalm 115:1 ESV

Is there a co-worker or friend of whom you are currently envious? What would it look like for you to rejoice at his/her success?
