Have you lost your appetite?

Have you read about Langdon, the boy who lives in Cedar Falls, Iowa? He has totally lost his urge to eat or drink.  It is being called a medical mystery with no similar situation having ever been discovered before. The article I read said, “He might be the only person in the world burdened with this bizarre medical condition… Landon has zero appetite.”

Are you hungry for more of what God has for you?

His parents, Michael and Debbie, are constantly telling him to take a bite, take a drink and he keeps responding that he is neither hungry nor thirsty. He has simply lost his appetite and nobody knows why. He is slowly but steadily loosing a couple of pounds a week and has gone from 104 pounds to 68 pounds. His life is in danger if he doesn’t get his appetite back.

“From the very first day you heard and recognized the truth of what God is doing, you’ve been hungry for more. It’s as vigorous in you now as when you learned it from our friend and close associate Epaphras.” Colossians 1:6 (The Message) Emphasis added

Have you lost your spiritual appetite?

Are you still hungry for more?

HUNGRY FOR MORE OF:

  • God himself
  • His word
  • A deep connection with his people
  • His ministry through you
  • His vision for you
  • His love and grace

If you had close relatives who were in the hospital and showing no interest in eating, you would begin to worry that the end was close at hand. They just lay there; no life, no appetite, no zest for living; hope is fading fast for them.

Then one day you walk in and hear them say that they want a Big Mac and a large fries. Those in the room break out in the hallelujah chorus. They’re back, their life is back, their appetite has returned. Hope is a reality again.

If you would be honest, have you lost your appetite? Are you as hungry for God as you used to be?

“But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first…” Revelation 2:4 (ESV)

Now there are some plausible reasons for having lost your spiritual appetite, unlike the case with Langdon where they don’t know why he has no appetite.

HERE ARE A FEW THAT COME TO MIND:

  • Unconfessed sin
  • Discouragement
  • Disappointment
  • Depression
  • Exhaustion
  • Burnout

If any of these are your experience, the triune God wants to be there for you and help you process what’s going on, along with some close friends.

Jesus wants to refill your cup as you turn to him in confession, repentance and brokenness if that’s your current need and condition.

“As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God?”  Psalm 42:1,2 (ESV)

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.”  Matthew 5:6 (ESV)

“Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food.” Isaiah 55:1,2 (ESV)

Fellow leader, get on your knees before the Lord of the Harvest and plead for a renewed thirst for Him and what He has for you. Ask for grace and mercy to have your first love restored, your hunger and appetite renewed.
